From there onwards the engine cuts power and power is lost to the point that the car reves.

When the car is in gear, slight accelaration is possible but any demand to get the vehicle moving, the engine looses power completely toa point where it struggles to move.

I have replaced the following: fuel pump, spark plugs, a censor in the exaust and of course all the unleaded fuel. They also cleaned the other censors in the exaust and also the air-intake. It seems my car only has one fuel filter which is the one in the petrol tank. We replaced the fuel pump to inproved the fuel supply pressure which at first seemed low. Should this car have two fuel filters? I have also replaced the air filter with a brand new clean version. It made no improvement. The car is now stuck as no-one, not even the dealer with any idea as to what the problem is.

Now thats what a lot of folk think we have two filters but only your dealer can get the other one out and replace it. I sugest it is this one that is patialy blocked and starving fuel supply. It has to be worth changing as yuo need to rule out all fuel starvation before spending any more moneynow yuo local dealer will have to look up on there Computer for the technical news letter for it there is a part number for the tool and the filterI thing it is about 1 to 1.

Thanks a lot for this most valued information Ivor! The dealerships here and in South Africa are unaware of the "second" filter. They do not even have it in their catalogues. The filter was removed and out of it came "some glu-ish" black liquid.

I really hope after cleaning this system the car would run properly. This has been a very long path to find this problem filter and I hope a few can learn from this to solve a similar problem. Replaced it but no change. Then was told that throttle position sensor was damaged. Now after SIX months in the work shop i'm being told that the catalytic convertor needs to be put back in. Waiting for a new one from Japan!! I'm not sure if this will even fix the problem. At moment the vehicle starts then dies. However it cannot be driven over rpm. I hope you can sort yours out easier than mine. Please Let me know what finally works. If the check engine light has come on then the fault has been recognised by the cars computer.

If you can find someone with the right equipment they can download the data and tell you what the fault is. When mine died not a GDI it was the crank position sensor. A bit expensive trying randomly to locate the fault. Lordy be, it's contagious. Have a good read through the relevant section on here, there are solutions, but not so easy to find.
