To download a new image from a TFTP server to the switch or switch stack and to overwrite or keep the existing image, use the archive download-sw privileged EXEC command. The HTML files for the existing version are deleted only if the existing version is being overwritten or removed. Stops the setting of the BOOT environment variable from being altered to point to the new software image after it is successfully downloaded. Downloads the software image without verifying its version compatibility with the image that is running on the switch.
On a switch stack, downloads the software image without checking the compatibility of the stack protocol version on the image and on the stack. Stacking is supported only on switches running the LAN Base image.

Reloads the system after successfully downloading the image, unless the configuration has been changed and has not saved. Keeps the current software image. Does not delete it to make room for the new software image before the new image is downloaded. The current image is deleted after the download.
The current software image is not overwritten with the downloaded image. Both the software image and HTML files are downloaded.
The new image is downloaded to the flash: file system. The BOOT environment variable is changed to point to the new software image on the flash: file system. Image files are case-sensitive; the image file is provided in TAR format. Compatibility of the stack protocol version of the image to be downloaded is checked with the version on the stack. If you leave the software in place, the new image does not have enough flash memory due to space constraints, and an error message is displayed.
For more information, see the delete section. All members, including the master, must have the same stack protocol version to be in the same stack. This option allows an image to be downloaded without first confirming the compatibility of its stack protocol version with the version of the stack. If the images are the same, the download does not occur. If the images are different, the old image is deleted, and the new one is downloaded.

VIP Advocate. The flash memory of Cisco routers is usually internal or can be a removable flash card on higher end routers. However, it may happen that for various reasons the operating system image may not be available, maybe due to file corruption, flash memory corruption, accidental deletion, etc.
In this case the device does not have a valid image to load and therefore the router boots into ROM monitor mode rommon. This mode gives a reduced set of commands that essentially allow the administrator to manually run the boot sequence. The obvious prerequisite of this procedure is to have a valid IOS image, which is suitable for the device you want to put into operation, stored on a USB flash drive.
Once we have this resource, we must enter into ROM Monitor mode rommon. If the device did not have a valid IOS image in the internal flash memory, it will go directly in that mode. In this mode we can see the list of available commands using the question mark or help command:.
Note: The command is dir usbflashx: where x assumes a value of 0 or 1 depending on which USB port of the router you are using. Router format? Format operation may take a while. Format: All system sectors written. OK… Format: Total data sectors in formatted partition: Format: Total data bytes in formatted partition: Format: Operation completed successfully.Villian asked a question. Got myself a new job and I need advice on how to load configuration files from my usb stick onto a Cisco router and a WS-C switch.
Does anyone have a more detailed note on exactly whats required expecially for the swich. I know it can be done with tftp sever, I just want to be able to do it with the USB stick. Copy the configuration file from the TFTP server to a new router in privileged enable mode which has a basic configuration. Assuming the usb port is not disabled, you would issue the command "sh version" and allocate the usb flash, then you would use the command "copy flashusb Instead if the usb port is disabled then you can enabled it by issuing the command "no hw-module usb disable" and reload the router to take effect after saving the configs.
You may need to tell the switch what file to retrieve from the usbflash0 device. Router dir? So if the router doesnt support usb I'll use the tftp route.
Nothing happens until you reload the router or you issue the command "copy start config" to reflect those configuration to the running-config file. You will copy cfg file in startup configuration on router.
After that you can reload router with that configuration. It should support it, when you plug in the usb drive, you should see on the console line the messages that the usb drive has been inserted, if the drive format is not readable then you should see an error message saying that the drive contains an unexpected values in the partition table.
I think Aref's point is the functionality isn't enabled by default on some platforms. You have to do this manually. I didn't know has a port for USB flash drive. They come through my job all the time. Once you understand how simple it is it'll work as easy as drag dropping files into it on a windows OS. Router format usbflash Format operation may take a while. Format operation will destroy all data in "usbflash1:". Format : All system sectors written.
Format : Total data sectors in formatted partition : Format : Total data bytes in formatted partition : - Format : Operation completed successfully. Format of usbflash1 complete.
